Retainer Care 101: Keeping Your Smile Aligned After Treatment

The hardest part of orthodontic treatment isn't getting your braces on — it's keeping your smile straight after they come off. Teeth want to shift back. Retainers are what stop them. Here's how to wear them, clean them, and make them last through Maine winters and beyond.

Full-time, then night-time, then forever

For the first 3 months after treatment, we ask patients to wear retainers full-time except when eating, drinking anything but water, or brushing. After that, you transition to nighttime-only — and that's the wear schedule we recommend for life. Yes, life. Teeth shift slowly throughout adulthood, and one night a week of forgetting won't undo your treatment — but a year of not wearing them might.

Cleaning, daily

Rinse retainers in cool water every time you take them out. Once a day, brush them with a soft toothbrush and a tiny drop of dish soap — not toothpaste, which is abrasive and clouds the plastic. Once a week, soak them in a retainer cleaner like Retainer Brite or a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution.

What to avoid

Heat is the enemy. Don't run retainers through the dishwasher, don't boil them, don't leave them in a hot car (yes, even in Maine summers — a dashboard hits 140°F fast), and don't soak them in mouthwash with alcohol. Heat warps the plastic permanently.

The case matters as much as the retainer

Lost retainers are almost always lost the same way: wrapped in a napkin at a restaurant. Keep them in your case, always. The case lives in your bag, not on your tray. Replacement retainers run $250–$350 — and require an appointment to re-scan.

How long do retainers last in Maine?

With normal care, clear retainers usually last 2–4 years before they need replacing. Maine winters are actually kind to retainers — heat is what damages them, not cold. Patients who summer on the coast and forget retainers on a hot dashboard tend to need replacements sooner.
